Check your camera and audio before the take
LumaRec
Check picture and sound before you record.
Finding the wrong camera or missing audio after a take means doing it again. LumaRec puts the camera preview, input selection and audio meter together, then saves your recording as a local MP4.
Available · v1.0.0 · Apple Silicon · macOS 13+
No extra runtime needed. Not Apple notarized; first launch may need approval in Privacy & Security.

Before you press record
You should not need a second take to discover a missing input.
For a short introduction or a camera demonstration, it is easy to leave the wrong webcam or microphone selected. LumaRec lets you check the live picture and incoming audio level before starting, with the output folder already chosen. You can confirm the setup while it is still easy to change.
Check the inputs while you can still change them.
Select the camera, inspect its live preview and choose the audio source. Speak and watch the level meter to see whether a signal is arriving before you commit to the take. An audio level shows activity; it does not replace checking your recording setup.
An interruption does not have to end the take.
Pause when you need to check a note or wait for a quiet moment. Resume when you are ready, then stop when the take is finished. You can handle the pause during capture instead of recording the whole wait.
Finish with a file you can find.
Choose the destination folder before recording; the default is Movies. After you stop, LumaRec exports an H.264/AAC MP4 and shows the saved path. Recording and export stay on your Mac, without an account or an upload step.
A deliberate choice
The session ends with your file.
LumaRec keeps the work around one camera take: confirm inputs, record and save. Native macOS encoding handles MP4 without an extra runtime or an editing project. If export fails, the original stays on your Mac; Help → Recover recordings lets you choose it and try another destination. A damaged original may still be unrecoverable.
Is it for you?
For Apple Silicon Mac users who want camera recordings with a checked input and a local file. Download 1.0.0, move it to Applications and grant camera or microphone access. No extra runtime is needed. This community release is not Apple notarized; system sound remains an optional advanced setup.
What it does
- Check the live camera preview and microphone level before recording, or choose Silent for video only.
- Pause and resume the take when interrupted, then stop to export.
- Save H.264/AAC MP4 using built-in macOS media frameworks, with standard, compact or high quality.
- Choose landscape or clockwise-rotated portrait output, with proportional center crop to fill the frame.
- Keep your device and folder preferences. If export fails, select the retained original from Help → Recover recordings and try another destination.
- Optional Input and Mix modes work with an already configured virtual audio input for system sound.
Requirements
- The first installer is for Apple Silicon and targets macOS 13 or later. Actual hardware recording was tested on macOS 26.5.
- A camera and Camera permission; a microphone and Microphone permission for audio. Silent mode needs no microphone.
- The standalone installer needs no FFmpeg, Homebrew, Xcode or extra runtime. Source development still requires Swift build tools.
Getting started
- Download the Apple Silicon DMG, open it and drag LumaRec to Applications. No separate runtime or developer tools are needed.
- Open LumaRec. If macOS blocks first launch, follow the installation guide to allow this app in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway, where offered.
- Allow Camera access, select the camera and choose Mic or Silent. For Mic, allow Microphone access and check the level while speaking.
- Choose a folder and quality. Record, pause or resume as needed, then stop and wait for MP4 export. Unfinished originals are available in Help → Recover recordings.
Current limitations
- This records a camera, not the screen.
- System sound requires an optional user-configured virtual input such as BlackHole or Loopback. Camera and microphone recording needs no virtual driver.
- Some audio-device combinations cannot be mixed in the same session.
- The frame is filled by proportional center crop; edges may be cut off. Source detail depends on the camera, and missing camera frames are held rather than recreated.
- This community release is ad hoc signed, without Developer ID or Apple notarization. First launch may require per-app approval in macOS. Intel has no qualified download.
